FINANCIAL PROGRAM
UE NEXT GEN MIMI START 4.0
Tenders for grants for industrial research and experimental development projects in the area of enabling technologies 4.0 for the security of critical infrastructures (‘Tender – 2023 – start4.0’)

SENECA™ has been presented at the IIW 2025 GNS 13 International Conference, which took place in Genoa at the Porto Antico Conference Center – Magazzini del Cotone, from June 22 to 27, 2025 – IIS – MYWAI Booth No. 10 (1st floor).
THE PROJECT
The SENECA™ EaaS platform aims to optimize production processes, enhance predictive maintenance, and ensure stricter quality control through a secure-by-design architecture for critical industrial plants. By using edge computers directly connected to the machinery, the platform enables on-site processing of data generated by industrial sensors, reducing latency and dependence on centralized infrastructures. SENECA™ will rely on an Edge–Intranet–Web continuum to implement distributed artificial intelligence solutions capable of analyzing data in real time and making autonomous decisions.
However, the growing interconnection between OT (Operational Technology) devices and systems with IT web services introduces new challenges in terms of cybersecurity. SENECA™ addresses these challenges by designing an inherently secure architecture that complies with the latest European regulations, including the New EU Machinery Directive, the EU Data Act, and the EU AI Act.
The SENECA™ project therefore aims to create, test, and validate a secure architecture for delivering Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms—potentially via ASIC chips dedicated to neuromorphic computing—in response to emerging sectoral guidelines and EU compliance frameworks.
Led by the coordinator KNOWHEDGE™ (www.knowhedge.com) in collaboration with academic and industrial centers of excellence, including MYWAI™, the University of Genoa, TICASS, and WALTER TOSTO™, a global leader in long-term critical equipment manufacturing for the oil & gas, petrochemical, and energy sectors, SENECA™ aims to foster a safer, more innovative, and more sustainable industrial ecosystem.
Validated in critical areas such as welding for the energy and petrochemical sectors, SENECA™ represents the future of Industry 4.0, combining technology, sustainability, and security for a new generation of manufacturing.
EDGE AI
Edge AI is the use of artificial intelligence, combined with edge computing, to collect and process data close to its physical source (reducing latency). With Edge AI, data is processed in milliseconds, enabling near-instant responses—whether or not an internet connection is available. Additionally, data security can be enhanced, as sensitive data never leaves its original location, reducing the risk of breaches.
Edge Computing is a type of computing that takes place near the physical location of the user or data source, rather than in a remote data center. By placing computing services closer to where data is collected, users benefit from faster and more reliable services, improving the overall experience.
